Drei is a short film about three professional assassins who are completing a contract for their handler Frank, whom they interact with only over the phone.
The trio; Adam, Elle and David are three specificically different individuals that, combined, make the best hit squad in the market. They make up for each other’s weaknesses with their different strengths and have a specific manner in which they complete jobs which has avoided them having any ‘mistakes’ or botched situations to deal with in the years they’ve been working together.
During this contract, for the first time they change one small detail which leads to a ripple effect and alters the entire course of the job. They end up in a conversation with the target, learn some information they were better off not knowing which then leads to an interesting opportunity and resolution which is far from what any of them would have expected.
‘Drei’ started life when director Nathaniel Tomlinson and writer Andrew Perez had a discussion regarding the dehumanization of antagonists in cinema, so they devised this screenplay which follows the typical ‘bad guys/girls’ and puts them in the spotlight, highlighting their human traits to show that they are just people who made a different choice to most.
The theme behind this short film is the importance of familiarity and how things can drastically change when it is lost. Nathaniel Tomlinson intends to make the audience question how important this familiarity is for themselves and what they would do if it were lost in their own, day to day lives. There is a secondary theme which cones into play throughout the story, which is ‘Where does your loyalty lie?’
Nathaniel Tomlinson has been making short films for the past two years and in that time has received positive feedback on his interpretation of characters and ability to make them ‘human’. All his other projects have been in the no-budget category but he is now venturing further afield in the hopes of creating something which will reveal his work to a wider audience.
