After three years and three failed Kickstarter campaigns, I was pretty discouraged about crowdfunding.
But it was only after I’d given up and come to terms with the facts that I had an epiphany. There, at four in the morning, staring into my computer, I realized my path in life is to be a big loser. I couldn’t believe it! That moment changed my life. Everything came into focus — all my past blunders, the popularity contests I couldn’t win in high school, the failed forays into the arts, the tears I washed down the shower.
What an amazing discovery to learn that all along, I’d been doing what I was supposed to be doing — failing miserably. And now I want to share that experience with you.
I see my new Kickstarter campaign as much more than a means to an end. A collective journey into a bottomless pit. Its the most unrealistic endeavor I’ve slapped together so far, and it requires the help of others to ensure it goes epic.
Together, we can throw off the wet blanket of mediocrity, and plunge headlong into a bottomless pit. It’s not just about “How can I give up right before success,” or “How can I self-sabotage.” It’s about that and more. It’s about doing it together, and doing it miserably.
I’m making a catastrophic film. I chose film because I’ve never made one, and the filmmaking process is naturally like “controlling a trainwreck”. It seemed like a good fit. A movie gives me the chance to showcase all my failed talents — singing and dance, fashion and pantomime. I’m not sure where it will take us; I’m just excited to sink another ship, big time.
Will I fail epically? Only the Fates know. But one thing I can promise is that I won’t stop. And if you feel that same hollowness well up inside, maybe you’ve caught fail fever too. And together, we can make something awful.
