Matthew Hilton Studio has designed a set of kitchen knives for Crane Cookware. Kickstarter orders start from Tuesday 17th September at 12 Midday GMT.

“We wanted to design a kitchen knife that both professionals and home-cooks could use. While a professional might want a dozen specialist knives, each for a specific task, we have focused on the essentials: a chef’s knife, a paring/utility knife, and a bread knife.”

The blade of the Chef’s knife is slightly shorter than a standard chef’s knife, designed to be more adapted to everyday use, more comfortable and better balanced in the hand.

“We wanted to design the handle that would allow people to use traditional or pinch grips in a natural, comfortable way, without being too prescriptive. Taking this into account, we designed a knife with a very pared-down design, using simple geometries to combine these details with authentic ergonomics.”

The Range is manufactured at Taylors Eye Witness who have been making knives in Sheffield for 180 years. The blade is made from latest generation Swedish steel, which offers a progressive balance of edge retention, strength, toughness and resistance to corrosion. The handles are made from FSC-certified solid walnut.

As well as the knives we are offering a limited edition A3 print of the K1 Chef knife, signed by Matthew Hilton and screen-printed in the UK at Harvey Lloyd on 350gsm Colorplan paper. Backers will receive one of three randomly selected colours.

Also available is a set of three limited edition postcards of the design, printed in the UK at FE Burman on 350gsm Colorplan paper.

We are also offering the B1 chopping board. Designed in 2018, made from a single piece of walnut, included in the ‘Knife and Board Set’ as well as on it’s own.
