Chicago, IL — Reel Mamas Chicago, a new online magazine and digital media company recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to help them travel to the Sundance Film Festival, where they plan to interview Women Directors and review films.

The company was founded in 2018 by Chicago native, Aisha Allen, a wife, mom, filmmaker,and a graduate of Columbia College Chicago. The mission of Reel Mamas Chicago is to empower and inspire Women Filmmakers and provide a platform for their work.

The online magazine includes interviews, film reviews, essays, articles and feature stories about Women in the Film and TV industry. Over the past year, Reel Mamas Chicago has covered many film industry events including the Chicago International Film Festival, where they reviewed films directed by women and interviewed Kasi Lemmons, Director of Harriet and Oscar Award Winning Production Designer, Hannah Beachler.

According to the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, in the Spring of 2019 Women made up 34% of all film reviewers. Reel Mamas Chicago has joined the international movement for gender parity in the Entertainment Industry.
These numbers are critical in an industry where early film reviews at major film festivals, like Sundance help shape the dominant narrative surrounding a film, ultimately determining which films will receive big deals and major distribution pushes.

“There is a shift going on in the industry right now, companies and organizations are realizing that in addition to having diversity behind the camera we must also have diversity among the people who are reviewing the films.”
