American Students for Educational Liberty is a 501(c)(3) pending student-run non-profit organization based in Connecticut, USA. The organizations purpose is promoting legislation on the national and state level and also working with local school districts to make meaningful reforms that can change the shape of education for the better of students. The organization has two main goals which are accountability and equity. Equity related to the funding received by each school district from the Federal and State government and the usage of those funds. Several school districts in the United States do not receive a fair amount of federal funding causing schools to fall apart both structurally and academically. These schools are predominantly in low-income minority communities preventing students in these communities from higher achievement whether it be in college or other post-secondary opportunities. We need to make sure all students receive the same quality of education and make sure that the standard for education nationally is much higher than it is right now. We need to get more funding to schools across our country and re-evaluate our government spending on other projects. The government spends billions of dollars on earmark to appease interest groups but it is time that the funding for these programs is redirected towards government schools who truly need it.

The second issue that we need to deal with is accountability. Education across this country is falling apart because there are no standards and the standards that do exist are rarely enforced or examined. Students often sit in classes with ineffective educators who are unable to successfully relay the information to their students. Other times, the issue lies with the administrators. School administrators often hold back funds from teacher improvement to instead spend it on less useful activities that look good on paper but do not have a significant impact on student learning. Administrators should spend their funds on professional development for teachers and for themselves. They need to make sure that they have the most up to date information and strategies for learning and if they don’t, they are therefore unable to prepare students for their futures.
