Castles of Caleira is a beautifully illustrated fantasy landscape microgame where players compete to construct the greatest castle. Each of the 18 cards in the deck represents a critical piece of castle, and when constructed it has an impact upon the game, and the person who’s castle is left standing with the most valuable pieces is the winner.

Castles of Caleira is the first game to be released from Cutlass Boardgames, and is set as a prequel to the upcoming titular game: Cutlass, which is set in an alternate timeline of Pirates, Cthulean monsters, Occult worship and Ship to Ship combat. Castles of Caleira sets the backdrop for this epic saga by showing the key locations of the main city, and gives us a cute look at how the people live there 50 years before the sanity-questioning events that transform the world, and begin the timeline of the Cutlass Boardgame.

The story is set as two kings, who were rivals each had a settlement on opposing hills in Caleira, and as each settlement grew in size, so did that kings thirst for dominance over the other. Eventually each king began construction of a great keep that would show his claim to the hills, and as each Castle grew, so did each king’s ego until the conflict saw that one of the castles was sundered, and slowly faded into iniquity.

Castles of Calera is a light game, and is easy to set up, but has a unique strategic depth that quickly sets it aside from other games in the category. This unique game play and replayability, coupled with it’s striking unique illustrations make for a truly different kind of filler game.
