Crestview – Collegiate High School senior Ian Eberle of Crestview, Florida, has designed a deck of playing cards that will be printed and licensed by Bicycle®, a brand of the United States Playing Card Company. Eberle is currently running a fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter in order to raise the necessary funds to send the cards into production.
“The card design is inspired by the CMYK color model typically associated with printer technology,” Eberle said. “Instead of having traditional suits, I wanted to change it up. Suits became colors, and card values turned into a gradient. It really challenges the way we traditionally look at playing cards.”
If the Kickstarter campaign is able to raise $14,000, then Bicycle® will print and license Eberle’s design. The cards will then go into regular production to be sold at retailers where Bicycle® cards are found. The Kickstarter campaign accepts donations at four different levels: $10, $17, $50, and $100. If the funding goal is successful, donors (called “backers”) will receive one deck, two decks, six decks, or twelve decks of cards, depending on their pledge amount.
Eberle admitted that he never saw his design turning into a physical product. “I initially started this as a hobby project. I had learned how to use Adobe Illustrator during my time in the CHOICE program at Crestview High School, and this is really the first time those skills are creating something tangible. Once I realized that I had a creative idea, I pitched it to Bicycle®, and now I am in the process of raising the funds to make this a reality.”
Eberle’s Kickstarter campaign will run from May 4 to June 3. To purchase a deck of playing cards, visit www.kickstarter.com. If successful, the playing cards will be delivered to backers in August.
