Following an unsuccessful search for a 3D filament extruder which could fulfill our needs here at Protea Design, one of our engineers decided that it was time to solve the problem ourselves.
“The search for a filament extruder was triggered by our need to recycle failed prints and prototypes of products we were involved in designing. We wanted to reduce the waste brought on by constant design changes during the prototyping phase of various projects, and at the same time reduce our expenses.”
The issue that our team ran into during the search for a consumer grade filament extruder was that most were either too expensive, too slow, or just too inefficient. When it comes to filament extrusion, it is not just about one particular specification or feature that makes or breaks an extruder, but rather a culmination of a few key specifications and features. One of the biggest killers when it comes to purchasing a filament extruder is the extrusion speed. If you want a faster extrusion speed, then the machine will increase in price exponentially. However, even the highest priced consumer grade filament extruder is not always the fastest or the most efficient. Unfortunately, this is still the case despite filament extruders having been available on the consumer market for quite a few years now.
Starting in 2015 our team has been hard at work engineering a game changing filament extruder to end the slow, overpriced extrusion process faced by all makers alike. After nearly 3 years of designing, re-designing, prototyping and testing, the DNA Extruder is finally making its long awaited debut. Featuring a sleek, unibody shell, the DNA Extruder will look great in your home-office, workshop, garage or anywhere else the desire to extrude strikes you. Capable of easily extruding 1 full roll of filament in 1 hour, it is the fastest extruder available for under $1,000. Such speeds are achieved through the use of a new and innovative screw and barrel design, which push filament extrusion to an entirely new level. This is all supported by an internationally compatible power supply and an easy to use digital PID controller. The DNA Extruder can reach a maximum temperature of 250C, allowing you to extrude most materials commonly used in 3D Printing. To add to all of this, the extruder is equipped with a hopper capable of holding 1kg of pellets. So, no more standing around and feeding your machine, wondering when it will run out, or how much filament you will get at the end. So, why settle for something that is overpriced, slow, bulky and can hardly keep up? Whether you’re looking to upgrade to a new filament extruder or buying your first one, you definitely won’t go wrong with the DNA Extruder by Protea Design.
The DNA Extruder crowdfunding campaign is now LIVE on Kickstarter.
