Qex is a virtual tabletop application. Using Qex, players can connect computers, manipulate objects in three-space, and store detailed information about their characters. Qex is free (ad-free, non-crippled) software for the Microsoft Windows operating system and works across TCP/IP for Internet and intranet connectivity.
Among many options for virtual tables, Qex is the only one to feature full 3D animation. Characters instructed to walk take steps. Doors swing open. Weather effects like rain and fog obscure vision.
The D20 rules Qex ships with are implemented through XML and scripting. The system can be tailored to individual campaign variants, or removed entirely to be replaced by some other rules set such as D6.
After years of development, Qex is nearing version 1.0, so it’s time to expand the graphics into a form suitable to a fully-featured product. Creation of monsters is resource-intensive since there are so many of them. A Kickstarter campaign is in progress to create the funds required for 150 animated monsters and characters. This includes wearable clothing for player characters. Backer rewards within the campaign allow for custom items to be created. The Kickstarter campaign will run until the end of 2013.
For Game Masters, Qex generates encounters on the fly, rolls treasure and divides the loot among the monsters. It applies monster templates, skills and feats as indicated, tracks initiative and saves player and NPC databases. The ability to join maps to create seamless scrolling maps and to read hand-drawn mazes all comes with the current version. It can save maps including initative so that GMs and Player can break mid sessio nand come back to hwere they left off. Game Masters can use this feature to share maps they’ve created. Qex has numerous landscaping features and allows wall-placement and terrain modification on live maps that contain players.
