Awesome Rubber Grip and Graphics Could be Game Changers

While doing a swim workout in 2012, Chris Pike was struck by lighting. Luckily, it was a girl’s swim-cap that provided the bolt of inspiration, not an atmospheric discharge. He thought, ‘What if that fit over a football, or soccer ball, and glowed in the dark?’ After 30 years in the trendy L.A. restaurant and bar business Chris had become a family man looking for a change. Could this simple idea be the opportunity he was looking for? Perhaps so, because he soon realized that these ball covers could do much more than just glow.

For one thing, the rubber would provide tremendous grip. Obviously this product would be for leisure, not league play, but one need not look any further than former NFL player Lester Hayes to understand the appeal of added grip. Hayes began using a substance known as “stickum” in the early 80’s that led to some jaw dropping interceptions. Finally in 1981 the NFL ended up banning the use of stickum because of its liberal use. Today receivers use gloves to increase “catchability”, a fact that highlights the sought after benefit of added grip.

More importantly, Chris realized that these ball covers could include graphics and could be sold with NFL, NCAA and other proprietary designs and logos once licensing rights were acquired. Beyond this, the graphics would provide the ability for corporate promotions. According to the PPAI, the promotional products industry had revenues of approximately $18.5 billion in 2012, a massive opportunity for this new product innovation. These added benefits made it clear to Chris that “Throw Glow” was an idea worth pursuing.

After successfully creating prototype ball covers and packaging, Chris and his wife Kimbra started a Kickstarter.com campaign on January 20, 2014 that will continue until the end of February 2014.
