British eccentrics Ian “Sprout” Neville and Dan “Gherkin” Richter are pleased to announce the release of Sproutword, a brand new tabletop game for 2 – 4 players.

Sproutword is a word strategy game, where the aim is to take control of the longest word by having more of your colour letters in it than any other player. This word is called the Sproutword. As the game progresses, different words will become the Sproutword as players jostle for strategic control.

Players have described it as “a bit like chess with words”, and “excellent for competitive articulators”!

The game can be played anywhere on a flat surface and players have taken “loan kits”as far away as Thailand, where locals took an interest in the game with regards to English spellings.

Consumers fed back that they hated the amount of plastic in use in tabletop games, and so from the outset the game has been designed around sustainable wooden tiles and natural cotton bags. “Everything from the cardboard box to the wooden tiles is carefully chosen”, explains Dan, “and what’s more we went with a manufacturer in England rather than overseas so that we could be sure of the provenance of the wood and use less miles to reduce our CO2 footprint”.

This is not their first foray into games design. Ian and Dan (or Sprout and Gherkin as they like to be known) invented an educational game for work which has been played by over 120 people and is now attracting interest from across the National Health Service.

Anyone interested should note that the game was over 50% funded on Kickstarter in the first 3 days, and is expected to surpass its funding goal. Sproutword is available on Kickstarter until Thursday 29 August with up to 10% off what will be the usual retail price!
