The Chrono project is a 2.5D side scroller game, set in a fantasy world, with the magical Chrono and the technological Robo. The game features a powerful time rewinding mechanic, instead of basic saving and reloading. This mechanic allows the player to take on especially difficult challenges, while exploring different timelines and eventually saving or damning the world.

A free demo for the game is available on Steam. There is also a Kickstarter campaign to help fund further development. The amount asked for is very modest and is meant only to commission professional 2D artwork and music as well as buying necessary tools and assets.

The lore

The story is set in a fantasy universe. The population is split into 2 factions, the Chrono, who area lead by time manipulating wizards and the Robo, who swear by technology and science. You, the player, a humble guard working for the Chrono, are suddenly approached by your leader, a powerful wizard known as the Patriarch.

He explains to you that the Robo are planning to destroy the Chrono and he needs a champion to act and defend their home. He bestows you with the power to manipulate time and sends you on your way to fight the Robo. As the story progresses, you slowly learn more details about this quest and the true nature of the two factions. Your choices lead to different outcomes, some better, some worse. Use your powers well, and you may find a suitable outcome.

The gameplay

Central to the game is the time rewinding mechanic. It serves in many aspects of game play, but is also tied elegantly into the story itself. It allows you to undo pivotal choices throughout the game’s story, and explore different paths. In other words, you can enjoy the full complexity of a branching story line within a single playtrough.

The game play itself consists of action, platforming and puzzle elements. You fight enemies and bosses, leap towards and grab onto platforms and solve problems. Each aspect is assisted by the main mechanic. You can retry difficult challenges, explore different options in different timelines and find information that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Art & music

The game is built in a modest cartoon style, which is not too far from realistic. 3D models are home-made, built to suit the needs of the environment and gameplay. Store bought assets are used sporadically to pad out the background.
