My name is Adam McBride and my partner and I created The Theft-Proof Drawstring Backpack that launched on Kickstarter a week ago. The bag is extremely cut-resistant and lockable. Essentially, it’s a portable safe for your valuables. We blew through our initial goal of $18K and since created a stretch goal that no other product campaign has ever done. It became clear to us that what backers wanted, more than anything, but very few companies ever delivered was their product in a timely fashion.
So for our stretch goal reached out to our US manufacturer and explained to them that our project was 100% funded, and therefore we wanted to use that to collateralize our payment to them so they could start manufacturing NOW before we actually had the money in hand. We kept pushing, and got them to agree to start production once we hit 3X the amount we needed. Done! For us, this was a no-brainer. Once we hit $54,000 our manufacturer will begin production without us actually having the money in hand. What this means is that we will be able to start shipping bags IMMEDIATELY at the close of our campaign.
We hope you think this idea is as cool as we do. We think for crowdfunding sites to continue to be successful and credible, companies need to be more prepared with the sourcing and manufacturing logistics before starting a campaign. Too many times product campaigns end with months of delays and unhappy backers.
