Delicatessen concept store, The Fashion Deli, opening in NYC this fall
NEW YORK – – South African designer Thulare Monareng is bringing a fresh new take on African fashion this fall with the launch of her concept store, The Fashion Deli, which will specialize in ethically-produced and sustainable fashion and lifestyle products inspired by and made in Africa. The pop-up store will open in during New York Fashion Week in September.
Social and ethical responsibility is at the core of The Fashion Deli’s ethos. Thulare has selected talented African designers who are committed to sustainable design. Ninety percent of the retail stock is designed on the African continent with merchandise packaged in repurposed or recycled materials.
“I’ve had this dream for quite some time,” says Thulare. “Africa has long been regarded as a mysterious, yet beautiful and tragic continent. I want The Fashion Deli to change that perception of Africa – that it is a cutting edge, en vogue producer of haute couture. I want to create a memorable retail experience for my customers and, in turn, show the highly-skilled artisans, raw materials and rich cultures of Africa.”

The Fashion Deli first started in Cape Town, South Africa in 2011 and received worldwide coverage for its unique presentation of haute fashion in repurposed, vintage Pepsi refrigerators, ice cream tubs, diary fridges, candy jars and baking cups. T-shirts were packaged in pizza boxes, belts in bagel boxes and handbags in cake boxes making the shopper’s experience a delectable
delight. Thulare has created an Indiegogo campaign seeking the help of 7,000 supporters to raise $175,000 in time for The Fashion Deli’s opening in September. For more information, visit the Indiegogo campaign or the company website.
