“The true stories of tabletop gamers.” That’s what ”Table Tales” is all about. This new, live-action web series currently undergoing a Kickstarter fundraising effort. The series takes actual stories that have occurred around the gaming table and retells them in each episode.
“ ‘Table Tales’ is designed to give the gaming story something it has always seemed to lack. A desire for anyone to actually listen to it.” Said Chris Hussey, creator of the series.
Utilizing a cast of recurring characters, the stories become parts of the group’s own exploits over the first season. Like other efforts that chronicle the lives of role-players, ‘Table Tales’ adds that extra element of truth, in that the action around the table has actually occurred.
Even though these stories come from actual players, a nugget of truth for all gamers exists within. If you’ve ever sat down with a group of friends to play any role-playing game, you are likely to have had an experience similar those presented in the episode. It’s this relate-ability that makes ‘Table Tales’ a show every gamer can identify with.
Being a large undertaking is not lost on Hussey. “We have six episodes planned for the first season, with a debut set for the first quarter of 2014.”
Hussey brings plenty of experience to the project. A gamer himself for 30 years, coupled with several years of both fiction and non-fiction writing, on top of 20 years working in the television industry give him the knowledge and experience to make sure the project moves forward. “If you’re going to ask for people’s money, you need to reassure them you know what you’re doing. I have the experience to not only pull this off, but well.”
The series also hopes to shed a more positive light on the image of role-players. While the characters in the show might contain aspects common to so many gamers, they aren’t exaggerated as they’ve been in the past. “Stereotypes exist for a reason, but the people in the show are very much your regular gamers.” At the core of it, these gamers are still people, dealing with all the highs and lows of of life that anyone else might encounter. It just so happens that all these instances occur around a common place – the gaming table.
The project has already received support from the Fear the Boot podcast, Reaper Miniatures and Fat Dragon Games.
The Kickstarter project runs through September 12th, 2013
